5 tips for successful maternity photos with a toddler
Expecting a new addition while chasing a toddler? As a Miami maternity photographer, this is one of my favorite sessions to shoot. Here are my 5 tips to make it beautiful, fun, and stress-free.
1. Be prepared and flexible.
Pack essential items like snacks, water, and favorite teddy bear to keep your toddler happy and engaged throughout the session. Keep in mind that toddlers can be unpredictable, so be flexible and patient if things don’t go exactly as planned. Sometimes the unexpected moments turn out to be the most precious ones.
2. Keep it fun and playful.
Toddlers have limited attention spans, so make the session enjoyable for them. Incorporate games, toys, or activities that they enjoy. Encourage them to interact with the baby bump, talk to the baby, and show their excitement in their own unique way. Create a playful and joyful atmosphere with your little one, and let me capture the authentic and candid moments!
3. Time it right.
It is best to schedule the photoshoot at a time when your toddler is well-rested and in a good mood. This means after their afternoon nap, for example. I often recommend scheduling your session around sunset hour (the most beautiful, soft and flattering light, in my opinion!). Sometimes, especially during summer time, sunset is around baby’s bedtime. In that case, you could give your toddler a later or longer nap so she is ready to play and feels great during the session.

4. Choose a good location.
I have a location guide with all my favorite locations I send to all my clients. You can choose your location from that guide, or find one yourself. I’m totally open to explore new areas! A location where your toddler can explore and play is a great idea to capture candid and natural moments. It can be your home, a park, the beach, or something your toddler really likes and would have fun!

5. Capture genuine interactions and emotions.
Rather than focusing on posing, I prioritize capturing authentic moments you, your partner, your toddler and your baby bump. Encourage hugs, kisses and gentles play. You can also tickle your little one, tell stories, and engage in activities that bring out real emotions and connections. These candid moments will make the most beautiful, heartfelt memories.
